ORGANIZING FOR OUR FUTURE!

Ever since the Berger Commission announcement of the consolidation of Sisters and St Joe’s, there has been a great deal of uncertainty about what will happen next. CWA members worked hard to save St. Joe’s.  Now, as changes start to take place, RNs will have a seat at the bargaining table to negotiate these changes. It is important to have a voice in these changes, therefore the Technical, Service, Clerical and Maintenance workers are working to form a union to have a seat at the table along with the other union members.

What is CWA Local 1168 ? The Communications Workers of America Local 1168 represent over 4,000 members in the Buffalo area. This includes members at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Kaleida Health and several other facilities.  We represent many facets of health care job titles including: nurses- aides, x-ray techs, lab techs, dietary, pharmacy techs, rehab, respiratory therapy, environmental and the list goes on. (Click here for more information on our history and current staff representives)

How much are union dues ?  Union dues with CWA 1168 are 1.41 % of your hourly rate. This is a little over one hour’s pay per pay period.  Your dues are calculated based on the number of hours you work to a maximum of 37.5 hours. You don’t pay any union dues until you have a contract.

When will we have an election ?  Once a majority of employees have signed cards, we will file with the NLRB (National Labor Relations Board).  Elections are generally held within forty-five days from the date the cards are filed.  The NLRB will then conduct a secret ballot election on hospital premises.

The hospital defines the Business Clerical as a seperate Barganing Unit therefore to include this unit CWA would have to postpone the scheduled election and refile all cards with the labor board. So the Business Clerical Unit will have their own election scheduled at a date in the near future. We wanted to include all the units in the upcoming election but the hospital would not allow it.

If we unionize will we go out on strike ?   98% of contracts are reached without a strike. In our local union, a strike is your decision and can only happen if a majority of members vote for it.

How do contract negotiations work ?  CWA is a democratic union where members who know your work are elected from within your departmentsThese bargaining committee members negotiate the contract, along with other experienced negotiators from the Local.

In addition, bargaining surveys are distributed to determine the top priorities of the membership.  When the bargaining committee feels they have negotiated the best possible contract, it is sent out to a vote. A majority of members have to vote for the contract in order for it to be ratified.

We are stronger together
and united in one Voice!
